Fooled by the GPS.

Day 4 August 23, 2013

Today was a long day on the ferries.

We drove from Charlottetown to the Wood Island ferry to cross over to Caribou, Nova Scotia. We knew we had about a 45 minute drive from our CSer’s home, so planned to leave at 8:00 am to be there for the 9:00 am preboarding. When we got into the car, the GPS said 1 hour and 20 minutes!! I was so stressed and wondered how we had gotten the information wrong. If we missed the 9:30 am ferry to Caribou we were sunk, as there was no way we would make it in time to catch the big ferry to Newfoundland, which does not run every day and we are on a tight schedule to see and do all we have planned.

Winding roads and a very worrisome drive, but we made it on time with a huge sigh of relief!

Contemplating this matter afterwards, I realized that the GPS had not taken us on the most efficient route and I must remember this from now on. It is a great device but it DSCF7791DSCF7803is not always the most efficient! Checking with a good old fashioned map is still a good idea!

The Wood Island ferry was about about an hour and 15 minutes ride. I like this way of travelling to and from PEI as opposed to taking the Confederation Bridge. It just seems more authentic!  From there we drove about 4 hours to North Sydney to catch the ferry to  Argentia, Newfoundland. The scenery everywhere is very beautiful, even though the weather today was rather dreary. It is a 17 hour ride, so we will spend the night and try to get some sleep in the chair or on the floor or wherever!! We have our sleeping bags and pillows… night night..sleep tight…..

Thankyou for the memories of your journey on the boat to Argentia. The hours seem long when there is a sleepover. Did you see sea life greeting you along the ship. Dolphins usually follow the ferry inland from a few miles out. The ferries are huge to carry cars, train box and transports.

I go to sleep every night thinking your going to fall asleep and drive that car right into the Ocean. PLEASE BE CAREFUL. Sounds like your having an amazing time! Newfoundland must be an awesome spot. I really want to go sometime.
