Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: The Flamingo!

September 2, 2012

Early Thursday morning we packed up our campsite to head back to Las Vegas. The trip is 255 miles each way. The 2013 Nissan Altima we rented from Alamo was great. It was $121 to rent it for the 4 full days and the gas only totalled $64! The Grand Canyon National Park fee was $25 and camping  per night was only $18, so our Grand Canyon getaway was very reasonable. We came, we saw, we conquered!

The scenery on the route between The Grand Canyon and Las Vegas  is absolutely beautiful ! It is indescribable but I have taken lots of pictures to share with others and for Trevor and I to relive our experience.  I have never witnessed scenery like it; spectacular!

We checked into the Flamingo around 2 pm. We were excited to get a room here. I liked the Imperial Palace just fine and of course the price was right but the boys really wanted to stay at the Flamingo. They had checked it out and thought it is so much nicer, especially the pool area and they were right! The pool area is amazing..5 star as compared to 1 star for the Imperial. They are right beside each other.  I have not checked out Caesar’s Palace pool yet ; I am sure it is 10 star!!

So we got the Flamingo for only $35 for Thursday night, which was a real deal.  The prices vary daily depending on occupancy and since there will be hoards of people arriving for the long weekend, the prices will soar. We are going to pay the $115 for Friday night and go without a hotel for Saturday night. We can hang at the Flamingo and check our bags with the concierge and do the Vegas thing until we have to go to the airport at 5 am Sunday!! The city never sleeps anyway ..why not!

Bryan had told Trevor we needed to check out a hamburger place here in Las Vegas called Smashburger., Apparently it has rave reviews. It was not on The Strip but since I still had the rental car we were able to drive to it. We loved our Smashburger experience.  I had the Sin City Burger which was definitely sinful! I did not realize that on top of the meat there was also a fried egg… and many other yummy toppings. There is a special “smash” process that makes these burgers so tasty..the new thing and the franchise is spreading.  I dropped the boys off on The Strip and returned the rental car to the airport and then shuttled back to the hotel.

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas!

Smashburger sounds legendary. I need to try it for sure. As for the hotels, I can’t believe how cheap they are. Give the Pond Motel in Carleton Place a run for their money. As you know my friend Damon was killed in that car crash on Friday so it’s great you guys do these trips, cause you never know when your life can be cut short. Is the theme at the Flamingo like a jungle theme? Or why is it called that?
