McDonald’s Mirage!

August 29, 2012

We departed from Las Vegas about 1:30pm…a little later than planned. It is about a five hour drive from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon. The scenery was interesting and it varied a lot as we drove. We stopped at the Hoover Dam and took some great pictures there. It is certainly an incredible engineering feat! Boulder City seemed very touristy as it was full of hotels, gift shops, and every fast food eatery you can imagine. We didn’t make a fast enough decision where we should stop to eat, so I kept driving. Then we were sorry as we got stuck driving on a long stretch of highway where there were no signs of life except for the odd cactus. At one point I got excited and announced “I see a McDonald’s!” I have no idea what I thought it was. A mirage I guess! We drove and drove and when we finally hit civilization again we stopped at Popeye’s for chicken and biscuits.

Eventually we arrived at the Grand Canyon National Park around 8pm. It was dark, so it took the three of us about 45 minutes to put up the tent that was advertised as taking one man 5 minutes. At 8:45 we drove to the camp market area which closed at 9, so we were lucky to be able to get some wood and other supplies. We made a great bonfire were we roasted hotdogs and marshmallows and chatted quite late in the absolutely silent, beautiful campground. Quite a contrast to the bright flashing lights and perpetual noise of Sin City.

I just had an image of camping near the Grand Canyon and it was a very peaceful image…….i need to go there someday. The hustle and bustle of the city gets to me. Its nice to get away to the middle of nowhere. Now for the serious question….how was the Popeyes??? Was it as good(bad) as KFC??? I have seen the commercials and always wanted to try it.

Sounds like you guys are having the trp of a lifetime. Thats great! Enjoy it!!!!!!

    How are your headaches?
